The ROG Smartphone 5 is one of the mosts powerful smartphones to come out this year, even compared to other gaming phones. The device is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 processor in all its variants, from the Ultimate, which will be sold for 1299 euros in a limited edition starting from May 2021, up to that base, which we analyzed in our review of ROG Phone 5 , available starting from 799 euros. lifebloombeauty
For completeness of information, you should know that there
are also other models, which you can in any case learn more through the
official ASUS portal . Here we will instead analyze the performance offered by
the variant in our possession, to understand how it is positioned within the
market.
ROG Phone 5 surpasses 99% of devices on AnTuTu
The 16 / 256GB variant of ROG Phone 5 exceeds 99% of the devices
on the market in terms of performance, considering the general performance. It
is not who say it, but the version 8.4.5 of AnTuTu Benchmark, a well-known
application that is often used to make more precise comparisons, data in hand,
in the smartphone field. The latter scores a total of 735430 points. Of course,
these results are not to be taken literally, as the variables involved are many
and what matters is the final experience. However, they help to better
understand the brute force offered by this gaming device. To be clear, the
results returned during our test by the GeekBench platform do nothing but
confirm the situation: 1115 points in single-core and 3727 points in
multi-core.
There is not even too much need to go into detail: the data
speaks for itself. Just to give some context even to the less informed, the
newly arrived OnePlus 9 Pro in our test reached 712899 points on AnTuTu, Xiaomi
Mi 11 stops at 706123. In short, it is clear that ROG Phone 5 is a smartphone
that aims for the crown in terms of benchmarks. Take a look at the ranking of
the best performing Android devices , compare the results and you will
understand what we mean.
On the other hand, according to what was stated by Qualcomm,
the Snapdragon 888 and the trusted Adreno 660 GPU are respectively able to
offer 25% and 35% improved performance compared to the previous Snapdragon 865
and Adreno 650. Sure, maybe it's not exactly the best year in general on the
CPU side , but ROG Phone 5 aims not to compromise in terms of performance and
it succeeds. What matters, net of the benchmarks, are in fact the performance
in the field and the ASUS gaming smartphone does not disappoint in this
context.
ROG Phone 5 manages to master all the main titles on the
Play Store as it should, including resource-intensive productions such as Call
of Duty Mobile. The choice to focus on a display with a 144 Hz refresh rate
does nothing but make the user experience even more fluent. For the rest, the
main node to "solve" for many is the one related to the differences
with the previous ROG Phone 3, but in this case we have already analyzed the
situation in detail in a dedicated study .
Another important issue is that relating to the cooling
system , since in these cases it is necessary to be able to maintain the right
temperatures. Keeping "at bay" such a hardware compartment is not
easy, but ASUS has succeeded in doing so with GameCool 5. The processor is
positioned in the center of the body, between the two batteries, enclosed
between two layers of graphite. The vapor chamber then takes care of further
dissipating the heat. This allows ROG Phone 5 to never get too hot.
In fact, already on its own, the device manages to keep
itself within the norm, allowing you to easily play at maximum detail without
the body giving any discomfort. If this were not enough, the AeroActive Cooler
5 accessory comes into play, which has an integrated fan, is positioned on the
back of the device and is sold for 59.99 euros .
The latter aims to further lower the temperatures: more precisely,
it is possible to drop about 10 degrees centigrade on the CPU. In short, the
Taiwanese company seems to have thought of everything, both in terms of
performance and temperatures. On the other hand, ASUS has been persistently
launching itself into the world of gaming smartphones for a few years now.
