LG 's exit from the smartphones market was a bolt from the blue, given the history of the South Korean brand in the sector. The rumors in recent months had become particularly insistent and, between denials and subsequent confirmations by the representatives of the company, in the end the announcement arrived and shocked the lovers of the tech world. healthnutritionhints
Between 2002 and 2021, in 19 years of history, LG products
have pushed towards innovation in the smartphone sector, especially in terms of
design, with choices that were bizarre at the time but which in the following
years convinced other brands to follow the same path. To "celebrate",
therefore,.
Towards smartphones: LG G550, LG V9000 and LG KE850 Prada
We must start from the pre-smartphone era, in particular
from 2003 with a very special phone: LG G5500. This had a UFB display with 65K
colors and a resolution of 128x160 pixels, support for MMS and a 760 mAh
battery which at the time seemed immense if you remained in standby. The
feature that surprised the audience, however, was the slide keyboard that
allowed them to see the rest of the screen positioned below it. It was one of
the first products to adopt this design choice, which later became popular with
smartphones equipped with a QWERTY keyboard.
Another protagonist of this era was LG V9000, also called
"TVphone", thanks to the DAB / DMB receiver, the authentic, first
predecessor of what is now LG Wing. This format with a 2.2-inch TFT screen and
a resolution of 240x320 pixels, able to rotate from the classic vertical to
horizontal position to show the keyboard, remained in the minds of technology
enthusiasts of the second half of the 2000s.
Among the technical specifications , then, microSD support,
the single 1.3 megapixel camera and 1,400 mAh removable battery appeared. This
product, however, was already outclassed by the iconic Motorola RAZR clamshell,
by the first BlackBerry handhelds and by the Sony Ericsson W810i, a phone that
dominated among music lovers due to the joint venture with the Walkman reality
One of the most important names of the LG house, however,
was the LG KE850 Prada model, which became in effect the first smartphone with
a capacitive screen , even if it did not have a great success. Features include
3-inch TFT screen, microSD slot, 2 MP Schneider-Kreuznach camera, Word, Excel,
PDF and PowerPoint document viewer, 800 mAh battery and compact dimensions,
perhaps too much if you consider that the 'iPhone came with a higher resolution
3.5-inch display.
Experimenting in the future: from LG Cookie to LG G Flex
Once the smartphone era is open, we also begin to experiment
with new formats: the first was LG KU990 Viewty, a phone launched towards the
end of 2007 with a 3-inch TFT touchscreen display and three simple buttons to
manage calls and navigation. The real strength of this device was the camera
compartment, equipped with a single 5 megapixel Schneider-Kreuznach rear lens
capable of recording video in 480p at 30fps, and also a front camera for making
video calls. There was no lack of DivX and MP4 video player.
Those born between 1995 and 2000 will remember the iconic LG
KP500 Cookie, with 3-inch touchscreen display, 3-megapixel camera, three
buttons for navigation, calls and power, but above all the stylus included in a
special hole . This was used to interact with the smartphone and draw or play
with small titles that aimed to mimic the Nintendo DS which, between 2007 and
2008, became one of the best-selling consoles in the world.
However, other adventures should also be remembered such as
LG E900 Optimus 7, the first Windows Phone from LG equipped with a 3.8-inch TFT
display, 5 megapixel camera, Snapdragon QSD8650 chipset, 512MB of RAM memory,
integration with Facebook and features such as accelerometer and sensor.
proximity.
At the same time, again between 2009 and 2010 LG also
launched the first Android smartphone with version 1.5 Cupcake and subsequently
2.2 Froyo, namely the LG GW620 model with removable QWERTY keyboard.
The experimentation of the brand, however, also moved
towards the world of 3D displays which, especially in the cinema, had a boom in
the same period: we are talking about the LG Optimus 3D P920 model with
4.3-inch LCD screen and 3D interface , equipped with the TI OMAP chipset. 4430,
Android 2.2 operating system then upgradeable to 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and
dual 5 megapixel rear cameras, each for 1080p 2D or 720p 3D video.
Special mention should also be made to another iconic device
of that period, namely LG G Flex, one of the first smartphones with a curved
display that tried to explore another world in design choices and received all
in all positive feedback, so much so that three years later the successor LG G
Flex 2 was also released.
How to consolidate the brand: LG Nexus, LG G2 and LG V10
A golden opportunity was the Nexus series, started with the
LG Nexus 4 model and most successful with the release of Nexus 5. Release in
2013, it was equipped with an extremely clean Android interface and was
supported up to Android Marshmallow 6.0, so much so that it became perhaps the
most famous stock Android device of the period.
As for the technical specifications, it is a smartphone with
a 4.95-inch True HD IPS + display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset, 2 GB of
RAM, 8 megapixel camera with OIS and HDR, 2300 mAh battery and performance
that, at the time, they were definitely convincing.
Another important name for LG was the LG G2 smartphone, the
one that perhaps launched the South Korean brand in the sector thanks to the
5.2-inch True HD-IPS LCD display which in 2013 already appeared
"pan", equipped with Android Jelly Bean upgradeable to 5.0.2
Lollipop, Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 chipset, 2 GB of RAM, 13 megapixel camera and
3000 mAh battery. The competition at the time was led by products such as
Samsung Galaxy S4 which, however, could not compete with the LG G2.
LG V10
The years pass and we arrive at LG V10, another product with
a rather particular design choice given that together with the 5.7-inch IPS LCD
display with a resolution of 1440 x 2560 pixels there was also a 2.1-inch and 160
x secondary front screen. 1040 pixels, used exclusively to quickly access
applications and observe notifications.
Released in 2015, it was also capable of recording 4K video
at 30 fps with the 16 megapixel camera and the chip under the body was a 1.8 GHz
Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 hexa-core. There was also a fingerprint sensor.
A present outside the lines: from LG G5 to LG Wing and LG Rollable
Getting closer and closer to the present here is LG G5, a
modular smartphone that appeared at a time when Google's "Project
Ara" was an extremely alive concept among technology enthusiasts. A
project considered the forerunner of what is now Fairphone and which at the
time was LG G5, equipped with 5.3-inch LCD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 820
chip, Android up to version 8.0 Oreo, dual rear camera 16MP + 8MP (between more
with the debut of the ultra-wide angle in the smartphone world) and a wide
range of accessories to customize the device.
I jump to 2019 and we find LG V50 ThinQ, the first 5G
smartphoneof the South Korean company, with the possibility of adding a second
screen through an additional case, a solution purely dedicated to fans of
mobile gaming. The technical specifications are, of course, more known to the
public since we are talking about the Snapdragon 855 chip, 6.4-inch P-OLED
display with HDR10, Gorilla Glass 5 and Always-on display, 4000 mAh battery
with Quick Charge 3.0 and triple camera (12 + 12 + 16 megapixels).
The latest attempts to regain share in the smartphone world
were LG Velvet and LG Wing , which we have talked about on many occasions with
ad hoc news and articles. Se Wing was a decidedly innovative project thanks to
its T design with double touchscreen, but which did not achieve the success
hoped for by the company, LG Velvet was the last traditional smartphone
produced by the brand as the official "swan song", given the limited
sales and the accounts in red.
LG Rollable was supposed to be another workhorse that
focused on innovation thanks to the pull-out display, but the latest needs
forced the company to abandon the project .
Innovation doesn't always pay off
LG will certainly be remembered as one of the most iconic
brands in the smartphone sector : we have seen all the innovative products it
has launched on the market in its 19 years of activity, the attempts to propose
new and unusual solutions to users without however achieving the hoped-for
success. It will be interest to see which other companies will now take its
place by offering products that are out of the lines, anomalous, ready to
change the cards in the tech world. After all, it is curious to note how the
mainstream features of today were launched in most cases by brands that later
collapsed: the first notch appeared in the Essential Phone PH1, which at the
time did not get much support due to the lack of other features such as the
headphone jack and expandable memory.
BlackBerry, HTC and LG are competing for the title for the
first modern smartphone launched on the market, and only HTC is still alive
(albeit with water in its throat); HTC always proposed the first smartphone
with 4G, while Sony Ericsson proposed the first phone with Bluetooth and Nokia
the first with NFC. LG even debuted triple and quadruple SIM smartphones, as
well as the world's first dual-core and quad-core processor smartphone with LG
Optimus 2X and LG Optimus 4X, while LG G Flex 2 was the first with DDR4 RAM.
The lists could go on and on, confirming that trying to innovate does not
always lead to the desired results .
